Joyce Slinden

November 18, 1925 — October 9, 2008

Joyce Jean Slinden, age 82, of Atwater, died Thursday afternoon, October 9, at the Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 13, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Atwater with Rev. Grant Fischer officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. on Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Atwater Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Joyce was born on November 18, 1925, in Alexandria, Minnesota, the daughter of Rudolph and Myrtle (Olson) Lindstrom. She grew up in Grove City, was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Grove City and graduated from Grove City High School in 1943. On November 20, 1943, at the First Lutheran Church in Grove City, Joyce was united in marriage to Donald W. Slinden. They lived and farmed on the Slinden family farm until Don went into the Service in 1944. Joyce then worked at Honeywell in Minneapolis and then joined Don in Little Rock, Arkansas, working at a garment factory. Following the war, they returned to farming in the rural Atwater area. Joyce was also employed for several years at the Atwater Post Office. In 1991, they both retired and moved into Atwater. Joyce was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was active in various womens groups. She was also a member of the Atwater American Legion Auxiliary Post #375, garden club, book club and a 4-H Club leader.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Sr. of Atwater; three children, Don Jr. (and Helen) Slinden of Atwater, Judy (and Jerry) Hudson of Monticello and John (and Carol) Slinden of Grove City; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Charles (and JoAnn) Lindstrom of Litchfield; one sister, Shirley Erickson of Watkins and four sister-in-laws; Violet Lind and Bernice, Maxine and Areline Slinden, besides other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Marida Slinden.
