Kenneth E. Peterson, 85, of rural Atwater, died Tuesday morning, November 8, at his home.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 12, at Harrison Presbyterian Church near Spicer. Interment will be at Oakside Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Spicer American Legion. Visitation will be 5-7 P.M. Friday, November 11, at Peterson Brothers Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Rice Hospice are preferred.
Kenneth Edwin Peterson was born on March 9, 1926, on the family farm in Harrison Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota to Carl and Annie (Johnson) Peterson. Kenneth grew up in the rural Atwater community, received his education at the District #4 School and returned to work on the family farm. From 1945-1947, Kenneth served in the U.S. Navy where he attended Electrician's Mate School and served aboard the U.S.S. Robert R. Paine.
On July 30, 1950, he married Gloria Magnuson, and to this union five children were born. Together they farmed until his retirement in 1988. Ken was named Outstanding Young Farmer in 1960 and the District Dry Land Champion in 1980. He also was employed by the Soil & Water Conservation Department.
Ken served on the Atwater School Board. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and a Life Member and a past Commander of the Spicer American Legion Post. Ken served for many years as an Elder and Trustee at Harrison Presbyterian Church, where he was baptized, confirmed and married. He was honored in 1993 with 50+ years of membership, in which he was now the last surviving member of that group. He also served on the Oakside Cemetery Board as President.
Ken loved working outdoors, fishing, hunting, and traveling. After his stroke in 2004, Ken enjoyed going to Glen Oaks Adult Day Services until they closed and then he attended Bethesda Daybreak.
He is survived by his wife: Gloria; two daughters: Cheryl (and Gregory) Tauer of Atwater and Brenda Powers of Vacaville, CA; three sons: Gerald (and Susan) Peterson, David Peterson, and Dennis Peterson, all of Spicer. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister: Stella Trulson of Willmar; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Tony; and a sister: Helen.
