Kevin Van Sloun

Kevin Van Sloun, age 89, of Spicer, died Friday afternoon, November 30, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, at the Church of Our Lady of the Lakes in Spicer.  Interment will be in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 of Willmar.  Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, at Peterson Brothers Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer and will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Wednesday.

Kevin Van Sloun was born December 25, 1928, in Richmond, Minnesota, the son of Leo and Helen (Rief) Van Sloun.  He grew up and received his education in Richmond, graduating from Richmond High School.  Kevin then attended barber school and worked as a barber in Two Harbors.  He served stateside in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  On June 18, 1954, he married Arliss “Mona” Ramlo in Crystal and they made their home in Golden Valley.  Kevin worked for Bell Systems / AT&T until 1970 when they moved to Willmar and he began working for Minnesota Microwave.  They moved to George Lake in 1981 and Kevin retired from Minnesota Microwave in 1988.

Kevin’s priorities were his faith, his family and his friends.  He was an active member of the Church of Our Lady of the Lakes, where he volunteered much of his time, especially making repairs at the church and with the audio/visual equipment.  Kevin could fix anything and was eager to help his friends and family whenever he could.  He enjoyed gardening, spending time in his workshop, hunting, fishing, and camping.  He was proud to have lived independently until his recent illness.

He is survived by two sons: Kevin (and Deborah) Van Sloun of Forest Lake, and David (and Pamela) Van Sloun of Andover; a daughter: Julie (and Michael) Lindholm of Minnetonka; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law: David (and DeVada) Theisen; two sisters-in-law: Kathy Van Sloun and Eileen Van Sloun; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Mona in 2012; three brothers: Leon, John “Jack”, and Peter; and three sisters: Faith, Helene, and Carol.
