Larry L. Heinen, age 60, of Spicer, died Tuesday evening, February 25, surrounded by family at his home in Spicer following a battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Spicer. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, February 28, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and will continue for one hour prior to the service. Larry Leo Heinen was born on January 3, 1954, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, the son of Alois and Margaret (Spanier) Heinen. He grew up in the Sauk Centre community, attended the Holy Family Parochial School and graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1972. In 1976, Larry graduated from Moorhead State University with degrees in math and computer science and began working for Western States Life Insurance Company as a computer programmer. On June 23, 1979, in Willmar, Minnesota, Larry was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Becken. They lived in Hutchinson while he worked at Schwartz Manufacturing in Lester Prairie for one year. In 1980, they moved to Willmar and Larry began employment at the Willmar Municipal Utilities, retiring in July of 2012 as the office manager. He was an active member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and involved with the Knight of Columbus. He was also a member of the Sons of V.F.W. Post #1639 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club in Willmar.
Larry enjoyed being outdoors cutting wood and working on his yard. He also enjoyed attending sporting events, hunting, fishing and family gatherings.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara of Spicer; three children, Matthew (and Courtney) Heinen of Cottage Grove, Kellie Heinen (and special friend, Markeith McCullough) of Richfield and Jessica Heinen (and fiance, Josh Johnson) of Eagan; two brothers, David (and Teri) Heinen of Prior Lake and Robert (and Kandy) Heinen of Lafayette, CA.; two sisters, Bernice (and Jim) Blacksher of Burnsville and Margaret Heinen of Burnsville; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Heinen of Sauk Centre, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joseph Heinen.
