Leo Eichelberger

Leo E. Eichelberger, age 91, of Willmar and formerly of Palmer, Iowa, died Monday evening, September 24, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 28, at the Calvary Lutheran Church Chapel in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Rice Hospice are preferred. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. (www.petersonbrothers.com)
Leo Ervin Eichelberger was born on March 19, 1921, on the family farm in Bellville Township, Pocahontas County, Iowa. He was the only child of William and Christine (Aden) Eichelberger. He grew up in the Palmer community, was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, received his elementary education in the rural schools and graduated from Palmer High School in 1939. Leo worked in the Palmer area with his father until he joined the U.S. Army on June 5th 1942. He spent most of his time with the U.S. Air Force in Orlando, Florida and was discharged on December 15, 1945.
On August 29, 1948, Leo was united in marriage to Joyce Seehusen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pomeroy. They lived and farmed on the Aden farm in Lincoln Township for 10 years and were blest with four children, Dean, Nancy, Roger and Carol to this union. On August 29, 1958, Leo was sworn in as the Palmer Postmaster, retiring from there on January 31, 1986.
Leo was an active member at St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years, member of the Palmer Lion's Club and a life member of the American Legion Post. Leo enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling and family camping vacations. They spent many winters in California and were known as "snowbirds".
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce of Willmar; three children, Dean (and Dena) Eichelberger of Willmar, Roger (and Joann) Eichelberger of Palmer, IA. and Carol (and Ken) Keymer of Boulder, CO.; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren and a son-in-law, Mark Spitz of Arroyo Grande, CA., besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Nancy Spitz and a son-in-law, Harold Thompson.
