Lloyd LaVerne Carley, age 84, of Atwater, died Tuesday morning, November 28, at the Clara City Care Center in Clara City. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, December. 1, at the Atwater Funeral Home with Rev. Grant Fischer officiating. Interment will be at Union Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Lloyd was born on November 25, 1922, in Atwater, Minnesota, the son of Edward and Norva (Atter) Carley. He grew up in the Atwater community, was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater and graduated from the Atwater High School in 1941. On March 2, 1946, Lloyd was united in marriage to Phoebe Holmgren. They lived and farmed in Acton Township near Atwater, retiring in 1963. Phoebe died in 1982. In 2000, Lloyd was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and has lived in several health care facilities since then. While Lloyd was in good health, he enjoyed playing the accordion, playing pool, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by two daughters, Beverly (and John) Finnegan of Wadena and Marsha (and Stanley) Herzberg of Paynesville; six grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Lorraine Akre of St. Cloud, Norva (and Emerald) Bomstad of Chaska and Fern Skallerud of Madison, besides many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Raymond; two sisters, Edna and Delores and two siblings in infancy.
