Lloyd B. Hovey, age 83, of Atwater, died unexpectedly Tuesday, November 30, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M., Sunday, Dec. 5th, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. The interment will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Atwater American Legion. Friends may call from 3-5 P.M. Saturday and one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Atwater Block Nurse Program or the Immanuel Lutheran Church Building Fund. Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home.
Lloyd Bernhard Hovey was born on August 15, 1927, in Atwater, Minnesota, the son of Martha J. (Johnson) and Irvin I. Hovey. He grew up in the Atwater area and received his education in Atwater, graduating from Atwater High School in 1945. He joined the Navy in 1945 and served and was stationed in Guam. He returned to Atwater and farmed for a few years. On August 20, 1950 he was married to Darleen Buer at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Atwater and they made their home in Atwater. From 1957 until 1965, Lloyd was the Standard Oil agent in the area and owned and operated the bulk delivery service. He went to work for the Atwater State Bank and worked there twenty years before retiring as Vice President. Lloyd then was employed with the Atwater Agency and worked as a realtor for a number of years before retiring. He was a long time active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he had served as President of the Council, was a past member of the council, a Sunday School teacher and a mentor to many confirmands. Lloyd was also active in the Atwater Block Nurse Program, Atwater Lions Club and Atwater American Legion. He deeply cared about his church and community and was a leader, ideas man and constant supporter. He loved his family and enjoyed following and supporting his grandchildren. Lloyd also enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, playing whist and visiting with his large circle of family and friends.
Lloyd is survived by his wife: Darleen of Atwater; one son: Brian (and Lisa) Hovey of Atwater; two daughters: Charleen (and James) Baller of Maple Plain and Jodi (and) Monte) Miller of Cincinnati, Ohio; ten grandchildren: Erin, Jen and Alex Hovey; Jakob, Nathan and Nick Baller and Josh, Brooks, Creagen and Courtney Miller and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers: Allen Hovey of Atwater, Glen (and Marsha) Hovey of Atwater and Wyman (and Linda) Hovey of Dewey, Illinois; and three sisters: Sharon (and John) Holm, Shirley (and Paul) Peterson of Cosmos and Twyla (and James) Ashburn of Spicer, besides other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dennnis and Kermit Hovey and two sisters, Norma Buer and Merilyn Johnson.
