Loretta Smith

WILLMAR

Loretta B. Smith, age 87, of Willmar, formally of the Norway Lake area, died Monday morning, February 26th, at the Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M., Tuesday, March 6th, at Calvary Lutheran Church Chapel with Rev. David DeMars officiating. The interment will be in the spring in the First Lutheran of Norway Lake Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers the family would like memorials directed to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Loretta Bothilda Smith was born on July 6, 1919, in Alta, Iowa, the daughter of Agnes Catherine (Madsen) and Hans Nels Hansen. She grew up and received her education in that area, graduating from Fairview High School in 1937. On April 22, 1943, in Mallard, Iowa, she was married to Harold Bernard Smith. They made their home in several areas of Iowa and Minnesota. They moved to the Montevideo area in 1963 and lived there for two years before moving to the Norway Lake area. Loretta moved into Willmar in 1975 and in 1993 moved to the Highland Apts. where she resided until this last December when she entered Bethesda Heritage Nursing Home. Loretta was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar, the American Legion Auxiliary in New London and the Senior Citizens in Willmar. She loved being with her family and enjoyed baking and doing embroidery work on dish towels for the Senior Citizen's Bazaars and for family. Loretta also enjoyed traveling, especially to Iowa to see family, friends and to attend her class reunions.
She is survived by two sons; Eugene (and Sharon) Smith of Fischer, Texas, and Dennis (and Laurie) Smith of Savage. Also surviving are five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two sisters; Maxine (and Kenneth) Miller of Spencer, Iowa and Joyce Ericksen of Alta, Iowa, besides other relatives and friends. Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, one brother (Russell in 2004) and one brother-in-law (Wayne Ericksen).
