Louis E. Thorson, age 78, of Willmar, died Sunday morning, January 17th, at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 23rd, at Vinje Lutheran Church. Visitation is one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
Louis Even Thorson was born on November 17, 1931, in Scarville, Iowa, the son of Knute and Marie (Lettrell) Thorson. He was baptized at the Winnebago Church in Vinji, Iowa. In the 8th grade, he moved with his family to Grand Meadow, Minnesota and was confirmed at Grand Meadow Lutheran Church in 1945 and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1949. In 1951, he went to work for George A. Hormel and Company in Austin, Minnesota and worked there until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952. He served as a Military Policeman for 16 months in Korea before his discharge in 1954. On August 21, 1954, he was married to Beverly Mae Jacobson at the Methodist Church in Grand Meadow, Minnesota. They made their home in Grand Meadow and farmed with Louis's parents until 1957 when Louis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. From 1958 to 1960, he worked for Buechner Lumber Company. Louis was then employed by Murphy Finance Company in Austin and was transferred to the Willmar office in 1965. In 1970, Murphy Finance was discontinued as the company was sold and his office closed. Louis then went to work for Irv Korpi at the Credit Bureau in Willmar for a few months before retuning to school at the Willmar Vocational Technical Institute for accounting. He was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church and a life member of the American Legion Post, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veteran's.
Louis loved golfing and needlework. He was an avid reader and enjoyed walking and visiting at the Kandi Mall almost every day and going out for supper with his wife, Beverly. Louis was very proud to have lived with MS for over 52 years.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Willmar and one daughter, Debra M. Gruenhagen of Willmar; two grandsons, Matthew and Benjamin Gruenhagen and two great grandchildren, Hayden Gruenhagen and Bailey Gruenhagen. Also surviving is one brother, James Thorson of Grand Meadow and one sister, Edna Thorson of Minneapolis, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and son-in-law, Kevin Gruenhagen, on January 15, 2010.
