Maralee I. Espelien-Weisgerber, age 91, of Spicer, died Monday afternoon, April 5, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Burial will be in the Spicer City Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer.
Maralee was born September 14, 1918, in Spicer to Claude and Lillie May (Jacobson) Doty. She grew up and received her education in the Spicer community. She was baptized and confirmed at Sharon Lutheran Church, now Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. On September 20, 1936, she married Walter Espelien at the parsonage in Pennock. They made their home on a farm west of Spicer. She worked at Orrred's and Halvorson's stores in Spicer and the ASCS Office in Willmar. Walter passed away on October 16, 1980. On March 25, 1983, she married Constantine Weisgerber of Watson, Saskatchewan at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. They spent their winters in Texas and summers in Spicer and Canada. Constantine died on December 27, 2004.
Maralee was active in church with Ladies Aid and teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She loved to keep busy with sewing, knitting, quilting and putting together puzzles. She also enjoyed her many travels to Texas in the winter and Canada in the summer.
Maralee is survived by her children, Keith Espelien and Judy (and Roland) Wohlin, both of Spicer; three grandchildren, Kathy Jo Espelien (and Erik Christenson), Todd Espelien (and Linda Carlson) and Joy Wohlin; eleven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Anita Doty and Lillian Doty of Spicer, Hazel Vercoe of Minneapolis, Katherine Weisgerber and Mary Weisgerber of Las Vegas, Nev., Matilda Jansen of Humboldt, Sask. and Rose Fritsch of St. Thomas, Ont.; a brother-in-law, Joe (and Rose) Weisgerber of Weyborn, Sask.; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, Walter Espelien in 1980 and Constantine Weisgerber in 2004; three brothers, Wallace, Rudolph and Clarence; and five sisters, Frances, Eleanor, Roma, Alice and Hazel.
