Marion Johnson

Marion G. Johnson, age 93, of Atwater, died Friday afternoon, April 22, at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29, at the Rosendale United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Atwater. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, at the Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Marion G. Johnson was born on September 25, 1922, in Bain, Minnesota, the daughter of Herman and Anna (Kiecker) Bernhagen. She grew up in the rural Atwater community, received her education in country schools and the Atwater High School and was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. On October 1, 1940, Marion was united in marriage to Roger Harris Johnson and they lived and farmed in Lake Elizabeth Township. She worked hard as a homemaker and also helped out with the farming and chores. Marion wrote for many years the social news for the Atwater Herald for Lake Elizabeth Township, the Lake Lillian Crier and the Cosmos Newspaper. Marion was an active member of Rosendale United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for over 40 years and was active in Ladies Aide. She was also active with Home Extension and Garden Club. She served on the Atwater Historical Museum Board and was a lifetime member of the Kandiyohi Historical Society. Marion enjoyed gardening, playing music with her son and entertaining others with their music.

She is survived by her son, Larry R. Johnson of Atwater; one granddaughter, Evonne (and Wayne) Jensen of Brookings, South Dakota and two great grandsons, Brandon and Hunter Jensen. Also surviving are two brothers-in-law, Kenneth (and Arlie) Norbie of St. Cloud and Bob (and Norma Jean) Johnson of Marshalltown, Iowa; besides other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roger in 2013; her daughter-in-law, Harriet Johnson in 1996; one brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Ruby Bernhagen and one sister, Arlene Norbie.
