Martin's early years were spent in Kansas and Garretson, South Dakota area until his family moved to the Diamond Lake area and settled at the Bass Lake Farm. He was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church near Spicer and received his education at the District 27 rural school at Diamond Lake. He was a past President of the Southwest Minnesota Hereford Association and a member of the American Hereford Association, Kandiyohi County Fair Board, Farm Bureau, and the Atwater Creamery and Soil Center where he also served as president for many years. He loved being with family and friends and was often called upon to give rides to those who needed them.
