Marvin Edward Nelson, age 77, of Willmar, died Thursday morning, June 15th, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in St. Cloud.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M., Monday, June 19th, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar with Rev. Barbara Johnson officiating. The interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7 P.M. Sunday at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the services at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the Willmar American Legion Post and V.F.W. Post.
Marvin was born on August 29, 1928, in Montevideo, Minnesota, the son of Charles and Susan (Mootz) Nelson. He grew up and received his education in the Montevideo community. On January 28, 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean conflict aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt as a fireman. On January 26, 1957, in Watertown, SD., Marvin was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Ruchti. They made their home in Willmar where Marvin worked as an Electrician for many years at Fuller Electric. In 1986, he began employment at the Becker Power Plant, retiring in 1992. Following his retirement, Marvin enjoyed working with his son, Mark at Nelson Precision in Spicer. He was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church, V.F.W. Post #1639, American Legion Post #167, N.R.A., N.E.B.F., I.B.E.W., and Local 292, where he received his 50 year pin. Marvin enjoyed building model airplanes and boats, go-carts and visiting with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Willmar; two children, Mark (and Tina) Nelson of New London and Sue Nolting of Apple Valley; seven siblings, Chester (and Monte) Nelson of Outing, Don (and Maude) Nelson of Battle Creek, MI., Russell Nelson of Osseo, Evelyn Wavinak of Minneapolis, Darlene (and Vic) Pinkerton of Beaverton, OR., Leon (and Betty) Nelson of Brooklyn Park and Phyllis Wynn of Wichita, KS., besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Joyce.
