Marvin Otto

Marvin G. Otto, age 92, of Atwater, died Tuesday evening, April 28, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. Interment will be in Union Cemetery in Atwater. Military Honors will be provided by the Samstad-Jensen American Legion Post of Atwater. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Atwater Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Marvin Otto was born to George and Josie (Amundsen) Otto on July 23rd, 1916 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended grade and high school in New London, graduating in 1934. Following graduation he attended Hamline University and the University of Minnesota. He was first employed by Strong Motor of Atwater in 1937. On February 22, 1941 he married Hazel Grothem. She passed away in August of 1963. He entered the Army in September of 1943, and following basic training in the U.S. he served in the coast artillery in New Guinea for two years. After discharge from the army in 1946, he returned to Strong Motor in Atwater. In 1957 he and Gene Walsh purchased Strong Motor from Sidney Strong. After purchasing the present building site on highway 12, the company name was changed to Atwater Ford. In June of 1978, he sold his share of the business to Gene Walsh, but continued working at Atwater Ford on a full time and part time basis, almost to the time of his death. This covered a span of over sixty years. In November of 1966 he married Gladys Sjoquist. Gladys passed away in 1999.

He has been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church since 1947. During that time he served a number of terms as treasurer and also financial secretary, in addition to teaching 6th grade Sunday school. He held offices of adjutant and also finance officer of Samstad-Jensen American Legion Post for a number of years. He also served a number of years as president, secretary, and treasurer of the Atwater Community Club, and served as a member of the Atwater Medical Association Board. He was a member of the Boy Scout troop committee for Troop Number 221 of Atwater. He was a volunteer delivering meals for the Atwater Nutrition Program for over fifteen years.

He is survived by a half sister, Joyce (and Charles) Holm of St. Paul and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wives, Hazel and Gladys; his parents; two sisters; one brother; and other relatives.
