Mary Downes

Mary A. Downes, age 54, of Atwater, died Friday evening, August 26, at North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis after a 10 year battle with MSA (Multiple Systems Atrophy).

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 3, at the First Baptist Church in Grove City. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Atwater. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home.

Mary Alice Downes was born on December 18, 1956, in South St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Louis and Jean (Weiszel) Pitka. She grew up and received her education in South St. Paul. On June 15, 1973, she was married to Mark D. Downes and they made their home in the Atwater community. Mary worked as a waitress at the Atwater Inn and then at Jennie-O Foods as a Lab Tech and at Willmar Regional Treatment Center in food service. Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grove City. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafts and cooking. She also treasured the time spent with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Mark of Atwater; two children, Maureen (and Matt) Hobbs of Burnsville and Mark (and Paula) Downes of Montrose and five grandchildren (Kyle and Vanessa Hobbs, and Nicole, Lindsay, and Justine Downes). Also surviving is one brother, Lou Pitka of Forest Lake and four sisters, Kathy (and Elliot) Grater of Maplewood, Candace (and Al) Zschokke of Paynesville, Gloria (and Dave) Johnson of South St. Paul and Lois (and Keith) Thompson of Bloomington, along with other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John "Butch" Borgan
