Mary Ruth Erickson, age 92, of Belgrade, died Friday morning, December 12, at the Belgrade Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23, at Oak Hill Cemetery near New London. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. www.petersonbrothers.com
Mary Ruth Erickson was born on December 23, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Oluf and Constance (Polman) Christianson. In 1927, the family moved to New London. Mary graduated from New London High School in 1939 and worked for a while at the Farmers Store in New London. On August 21, 1941, in Atwater, Mary was married to Melvin Holmgren and they later divorced in 1944. On November 6, 1946, in Mason City, Iowa, Mary was married to Karl S. Erickson and the made their home in Minneapolis. Mary graduated from nursing school from Eitel Hospital in Minneapolis in 1950 as a Registered Nurse. She began her nursing career in 1950 at Eitel Hospital and worked there until 1953. From 1953-56, Mary worked at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar in the OB. From 1956-58 she worked at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, from 1958-60 at Eitel Hospital and returned to work at Rice Memorial Hospital from 1960-74. Later in 1974, she moved to New London to live and care for her mother. Mary also worked at Glen Oaks Care Center in New London for 12 years, retiring in 1986. In February of 1999, she moved into the Ashwood Health Care Center and in August of 2013, she entered the Belgrade Nursing Home. Mary was a past member of the Minnesota Nursing Association and the American Nurses Association. She enjoyed caring for people and especially enjoyed working in OB.
She is survived by one son, Stanley Erickson of Hancock; one daughter-in-law, Glenda Erickson of California; several nieces and nephews, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Karl; one son, Kenneth in 1994; one sister, Helen Hegdahl in 1999 and brother-in-law, Robert Hegdahl in 1996.
