Mary M. Nelson, age 86, of Spicer, died Sunday evening, August 15, at her home on Green Lake in Spicer following an extended illness.

Private funeral services will be held at a later date. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Wednesday, August 18 at the Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers memorials to Rice Hospice or the Spicer Public Library are preferred.

Mary Margaret Nelson was born on February 19, 1924, in Kerkhoven, Minnesota, the daughter of Dr. Herbert and Grace (Merriman) Hoglund. She grew up in Kerkhoven, graduated from Kerkhoven High School in 1942 and received her teaching degree at St. Cloud State University. She was employed as an elementary school teacher in Pine City and in Willmar. On June 14, 1947, Mary was united in marriage to Roger V. Nelson. They made their home in Willmar for many years and later moved to Green Lake in Spicer. Mary was employed for over 17 years with her husband in the family accounting business. Mary was an avid reader and knitter and loved living on Green Lake.

She is survived by four sons, Steven (and Jerrie) Nelson of Black Hawk, SD., Riley (and Jill) Nelson of Spicer, Bradley (and Jorden) Nelson of Spicer and Lindsay Nelson of Spicer; two daughters, Kristin (and Brice) Greene of Spring Valley and Kay Margaret (and James Parker) Nelson of Spring Valley; 17 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roger in 1989; two sisters, Boo and Audré and one grandson.
