Maurice “Maury” H. Thompson, age 91, of Spicer, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, December 20, at his residence from an apparent heart attack.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 27, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Interment will be at Green Lake Free Lutheran Cemetery. Maury was born on February 23, 1933, in Spicer, Minnesota, the son of Carl and Lillian (Pallin) Thompson. He grew up in the Spicer community and graduated from Willmar High School in 1951. In 1953, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. Following his discharge in 1955, Maury began working for the Great Northern Railroad in the superintendent’s office in Willmar. From 1956-1957, he attended the Minnesota School of Business earning a degree in accounting and became an Auditor for the Singer Sewing Machine Company. He worked in the 5-state area of Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin. In April of 1961, he returned to work in Willmar for the Great Northern Railroad, retiring in 1990. Following retirement, Maury then became engaged in farming.
On June 27, 1992, Maury was united in marriage to Barbara Ellen Hoffman. They made their home in Woodbury and on a farm near Spicer. He was a proud member of the Spicer American Legion Post #545 and served as adjutant for several years and a member of the Willmar Elk’s Lodge #952. Maury and Barb enjoyed traveling, spending their winters in Hawaii for 28 years. They also traveled to several European countries and much of the United States.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 32 years, Barbara; three children, Mark (and Patricia) Hoffman of Osseo, WI., John (and Lisa) Hoffman of Huntsville, TX., and Dawn (and Paul) Swanlund of Woodbury; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and one sister, Marlene Anderson of Raleigh, NC.; besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Timothy Hoffman; and five siblings, Leone, Doris, Russell, Stanley and Harvey.
