Mavis Nelson

Mavis L. Nelson, 89, of Willmar, died Wednesday morning at Rice Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Willmar. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Funeral arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home.

Mavis Laura Nelson was born May 7, 1921, in Pitt, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Wagner) Ayotte. She grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School in 1939.

On August 15, 1940, Mavis was married to Roger Odell and they made their home in the Willmar community. Mavis was employed at the Willmar Medical Center, West Central Industries, Nelson Medin Dental Office, Willmar Cookie Company and as manager for the Rothenberg Apartments.

On February 5, 1994, Mavis was married to Dale E. Nelson and they lived in Willmar. She was an active member of her church, serving as Sunday school superintendent and was involved in bible study groups. She was also active in the Willmar Garden Club and Rice Hospital Auxiliary. Mavis enjoyed gardening, singing, knitting and crocheting. She was also active in area card clubs.

She survived by her husband of almost 17 years, Dale E. Nelson of Willmar; her two sons, Larry (and Heather) Odell of Bemidji and Frank (and Bonnie) Odell of Staples; one stepson, Scott (and Joy) Nelson of Stillwater; two stepdaughters, Jan (and Warren) Jorgenson of Houston and Bonnie Sorby of Burnsville; five grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren and seven stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Elaine (and Doc) Watson of Willmar; and longtime neighbor, friend and nurse, Esther (and Arnie) Rood of Willmar; besides other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Roger Odell in 1990; and two brothers, Franklin and Gaylon Ayotte.
