Morris W. Malquist, age 83, of Willmar, died Tuesday afternoon, December 30, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Funeral arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
Morris Willard Malquist was born August 30, 1925, on the family farm near Bird Island, Minnesota, the son of George and Hazel (Ruud) Malquist. He grew up and received his education in the Willmar area, graduating from Willmar High School. He worked on the family farm until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1947. He served as an aircraft mechanic until his discharge in 1950. Following his discharge, he returned to the family farm. On November 4, 1956, he married Marcia Bloomquist at Vinje Lutheran Church and they made their home in Willmar. Morris was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad as an engineer for many years. He also worked part-time as a meat packer in St. Paul. Morris was a hard worker and enjoyed cutting grass and shoveling snow. "Work before play" and "Up and at 'em" were two of his favorite sayings. He also enjoyed old time music and dancing.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia; one son, Kevin (and Kelly) Malquist of St. Cloud; one daughter, Dawn Bernier of Las Vegas, Nevada; and two grandchildren, Anne Malquist and John Malquist; one brother, LeRoy (and Helen) Malquist of Alexandria; three sisters. Audrey Dalien of Becker, Joyce Morris (and special friend, Harry) of Maplewood, and Carol Jean (and Bob) Hennessy of Eden Prairie. Also surviving are his grandkitties, Pepe and Mittens, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Delores Swenson.
