Myra O. Scheltens, age 98, of Willmar, formerly of Raymond, died Tuesday evening, March 3, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Services will be held at 2 P.M., Saturday, March 7, at the First United Methodist Church in Raymond. The interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Raymond. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Friday, March 6, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and at the church 1 hour prior to the services on Saturday.
Myra Odella Sachariason was born on July 15, 1916 in rural Montevideo, Minnesota, the daughter of Edward E. and Josephine (Bangsund) Sachariason. She grew up in that area and received her elementary education in the District 74 School in Chippewa County and graduated high school in Montevideo. She continued her education, completing Normal Training in 1936 and taught school in Chippewa County for 5 years. On December 28, 1938, she was married to Albertus L. Schletens at Saron Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. They made their home in the Raymond area and raised 3 children. After raising her family, she went back to teaching, 2 years in Kandiyohi County and 19 years in Raymond. While teaching Myra continued taking college classes and in 1964 received her Bachelers Degree in Education. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Raymond. Myra loved being with family and friends and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking, canning, playing music and creating special ways to help educate her students.
She is survived by two daughters, Gwen Gramer of Bingham Farms, MI and Gail Scheltens of Atwater; MN; four grandchildren, Michael Gramer, Timothy Gramer, J. Louis Gramer, and Chad Scheltens; four great-grandchildren, Paige Gramer, Brody Gramer, Madigan Gramer, and Soren Gramer; and two sisters-in-law, Verona Sacharianson of Granite Falls and Shirley Sacharianson of Montevideo; and other relatives and friends.
Myra was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albertus L. Scheltens in 2006; son, Lary Scheltens; daughter-in-law, Lelane Scheltens; three brothers, Eldred, DeWayne and Orton Sachariason; and two sisters, Sherlet McKinney and Arlies Christianson.
