Orville T. Gjerde, age 86, of Willmar, died Wednesday, May 6, at Rice Care Center in Willmar.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the dialysis program at Rice Memorial Hospital or Calvary Lutheran Church.
Orville was born November 10, 1922, in Green Lake Township, near Spicer, Minnesota, to Oliver and Mabel (Thompson) Gjerde. He grew up and attended rural school in Green Lake Township and was baptized and confirmed at the Green Lake Lutheran Church. Following his education, he helped his father on the family farm. On May 17, 1945, he married Alice Gilbertson and they made their home in Willmar. In December 1945, Orville went to work for the Great Northern Railroad. He worked 38 years as a fireman and engineer for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern Railroads, retiring in 1983. Orville was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Elks Club, and the Burlington Northern Fireman and Engineers. In his retirement years, he was a member of the Goats and the Willmar Senior Citizens Center, where he enjoyed playing cards. Orville also enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and attending his grandchildren's events.
He is survived by his wife: Alice; two daughters: Cheri (and Dr. David) Duininck of Willmar and Marilyn Gjerde of St. Paul; two grandchildren: Kristopher (and Amy) Duininck of Willmar and Katie (and Buck) Erickson of Carbondale, Colorado; and a great-grandson: Oliver Duininck. Also surviving are two brothers: Harlan (and LaVonne) Gjerde of St. Paul and Mylo (and Barbara) Gjerde of Spicer; a sister: Eleanor (and Walter) Swanson of North Carolina; three brothers-in-law: Arlo (and Wanda) Gilbertson of Litchfield; Don (and Anne) Gilbertson of Fridley and Don Johnston of Willmar; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law: Robert Gilbertson and two sisters-in-law: Mary Gilbertson and Lois Johnston.
