Oscar Skindelien

February 19, 1930 — May 4, 2013

Oscar "Junior" Skindelien Jr., age 83, of Sunburg, died Saturday afternoon at the Rice Therapy Suites in Willmar.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at East Norway Lake Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the New London American Legion Post. Memorials are preferred to the Sunburg Rescue Squad or East Norway Lake Cemetery Association. Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Sunburg Funeral Home.

Oscar Eldon Skindelien, Jr. was born February 19, 1930 in Norway Lake Township near Sunburg, Minnesota, the son of Oscar and Emelia (Rood) Skindelien. He grew up and received his education in the rural Sunburg community and was baptized and confirmed at East Norway Lake Lutheran Church. On December 22, 1951, Junior married Iola Netland and they made their home in the Sunburg area. In 1952, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served overseas during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge in 1953, he began employment as a carpenter and foreman of Minnesota Valley Construction Company and later worked as a self-employed carpenter. He built and remodeled several area homes and later built many pole barns and turkey shelters. Junior was an honest, hard-working man of honor. He was a lifelong member of East Norway Lake Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking and built many grandfather clocks. He was also an avid Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed listening to KWLM Radio.

He is survived by his wife, Iola; eight children, Patricia (and Ron) Molenaar of Raymond, Susan (and Steven) Rierson of Willmar, Jerry (and Cathy) Skindelien of Sunburg, Jeffrey Skindelien of Sunburg, James Skindelien of Sunburg, Jody (and Janel) Skindelien of Willmar, Sara Skindelien (and special friend, Jerome Montgomery) of Nibley, UT, and Jayson (and Danielle) Skindelien of Sunburg; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Douglas in 1955; four brothers, Vernon, Elroy, Wendell and Virgil; and a sister, Mercedes Nelson.
