Porter J. Ashley, age 80, of Litchfield, died Thursday morning, July 29, at the Meeker County Hospital in Litchfield.
Memorial services will be had at 2 P.M., Sunday, August 1st, at the First Presbyterian Church in Litchfield. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the Nelsan-Horton American Legion Post 104 of Litchfield, Minnesota. Memorials preferred to the Presbyterian Clearwater Forest. Arrangements are with the Atwater Funeral Home.
Porter John Ashley was born on December 13, 1929, in Jackson, Minnesota, the son of Augusta (Hegardt) and Porter W. Ashley. He grew up in Lakefield, Minnesota and graduated from Lakefield High School in 1948. Porter continued his education at the Junior College in Worthington, Minnesota. He joined the Army in 1952 and served during the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1954. He then attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota and graduated in 1956 from Mankato State Teachers College with a degree in Industrial Arts Education. On May 22, 1955 he was married to Dorothy Mischke and they made their home in Belview where he taught industrial arts. In 1960, he went to work for Minnesota Department of Transportation on in 1965 moved to Willmar. On December 29, 1984, he was married to Anna Bratsch in Willmar. He retired from MN DOT in 1987 and they moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico, later to St. Anthony, Minnesota for a short time before moving to Atwater, Minnesota. In 2004 they moved to Litchfield where they have lived since. Porter was active in his church serving as a Deacon and Elder. He was a member and Past Master of the Atwater Masonic Lodge Orion No. 138, a member of the N.R.A., the V.F.W. in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, the Willmar Chapter of DAV, Nature Conservancy and the Audubon Society.
He is survived by his wife Anna of Litchfield, two sons; Terry (and Edi) Mischke of Sublimity, Oregon and John (and Louise) Ashley of New London and two daughters; Virginia "Ginger" (and Joe) Bremer of Longview, Washington and Alice Campbell of Eagan. Also surviving are five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.
Porter was preceded in death by his parents.
