Robert Bjerke

Robert J. Bjerke, age 62, of Willmar, died Friday, July 3, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Military Honors will be provided by Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 of Willmar. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.

Robert Jon Bjerke was born March 17, 1947, in Willmar, the son of Albert and Ruby (Ekander) Bjerke. He grew up in Willmar, was baptized and confirmed at Vinje Lutheran Church and graduated from Willmar High School in 1966. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era and as a sergeant in the National Guard for many years. In 1966, he married Sherry Heining at St. John Lutheran Church in Atwater and they made their home in Willmar. They later divorced in 1980. Robert worked as a typesetter for the West Central Tribune for many years. He also ran the projector at the downtown theater and Chief Drive-in. He later drove for Care Cab. He was a member of American Legion Post #167 and a lifelong member of Vinje Lutheran Church. He had resided at Willmar Commons Nursing Home for the last 10 years due to his battle with multiple sclerosis.

He is survived by his children: Lisa (and Kevin) Wubben of Raymond, Michael Bjerke of Atwater and Joel (and Nichole) Bjerke of Buffalo; five grandchildren: Lauren Wubben, Angelika Shore, Jake Bjerke, Rebecca Wubben and Emma Bjerke; a brother: Allen (and Marge) Bjerke of Minnetonka; a sister: Bonnie (and Wes) Martinson of Willmar and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
