Robert Buckley

Robert John "R.J." Buckley, age 85, of Spicer, died Saturday afternoon, March 1st.
Memorial services will be 1:00 P.M.. Wednesday, March 5, at the Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer. Interment will be at a later date in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Henderson-Lewis American Legion Post 545 from Spicer. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are preferred to the Humane Society of Kandiyohi County (210 17th St. SE Willmar, MN).
Robert was born on July 28, 1922 near Minneota, Minnesota, the son of Denage (Rainier) and Cyril Buckley. He grew up in the Minneota area and received his early education there. R.J. moved with his family to St. Peter and he completed his education graduating from St. Peter High School in1940. He joined the Marines in 1942 and served during WW II on the U.S.S. Indiana Battleship in the Pacific Theater. He was a 20 mm gunner and also served in the Honor Guard. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Minnesota and on April 21, 1945 he married Shirley Hanley in Hastings, Nebraska, and they made their home in Redwood Falls. He formed a partnership with his brother John and started the Redwood Falls Nursery in 1950. In 1976, R.J. moved to Spicer and in 1977 started the Green Lake Nursery where he worked until he semi retired due to his health at the age of 84 years. R.J. was passionate about his tree farm, nature walks, politics, golf and reading.
He is survived by special friend and former wife, Shirley Buckley, two sons, David (and Barbara) Buckley of North Branch and Tom (and Laurie) Buckley of Coon Rapids, two daughters; Laura (and Danny Commerford) Buckley of Spicer and Julie (and Gerry Mansell) Buckley Mansell of Kailua, Hawaii, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, John (and Caroline) Buckley of Redwood Falls, one sister, Loretta (and Mel) Gustafson of New Hope and sister-in-law: Jeanne Buckley of Hastings, besides other relatives and friends. R.J. was preceded in death by his parents, daughter (Pamela Buckley) and two brothers (Gordon and Wendell Buckley).
