Robert "Bob" Ellis Guptill, age 96, of Willmar, died Monday morning, August 17, at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 20, at Vinje Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Willmar American Legion Post. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Wednesday, August 19, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Robert "Bob" Ellis Guptill was born on April 20, 1913, in Mankato, Minnesota, the son of Richard and Mabel (Cram) Guptill. At a young age, his family moved to Paynesville and he graduated from Paynesville High School in 1931. Bob worked for a while in the CCC camps in northern Minnesota. On April 18, 1936, he was united in marriage to Ruth M. Johnson. They lived in Minneapolis and Paynesville. In 1940, they moved to Willmar and Robert became employed at the Willmar State Hospital for several years. From February to December in 1944, he served stateside in the U.S. Army. Following a medical discharge, Bob returned to Willmar and in 1945, founded the Bob Guptill Painting and Decoration Service, of which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church and served as an usher and on the building and stewardship committees.
Bob enjoyed fishing with his family and friends, reading, especially cookbooks and Newsweek magazine, making wine and spending time at the family cabin on Norway Lake.
He is survived by his three children, Barry (and Christine) Guptill of Park Rapids, Alan (and Virginia) Guptill of Park Rapids and Carolyn (and Curt) Olson of Willmar; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Also surviving are two sisters, Sarah Hansen of Casper, WY., and Ethel Berg of Edina, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth in March of 2008; three brothers, Richard, William and Harold; two sisters, Leona and Irene and two infant granddaughters, Jody and Paula Olson.
