Robert Hawes

Robert "Bob" L. Hawes, age 85, of Spicer, died Wednesday afternoon, May 6th, at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM Thursday, May 14th, at the Green Lake Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Spicer, Minnesota. Friends may call one hour prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials to Rice Hospice in Willmar.

Robert Lamont Hawes was born on February 4, 1924 in El Paso, Texas, the son of Jane (Brimcombe) and Elwin L. Hawes, Jr. They moved to Duluth, Minnesota in 1926 and later to Minneapolis in 1934. He grew up and received his education in Duluth and Minneapolis, graduating from Washburn High School in 1940. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi. Bob interrupted his education and joined the Navy in 1942. During his tour of duty, Bob was the commander of a mine sweeper and helped clear the mines near Iwo Jima before the invasion. He returned to the U of M and completed his education, receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Bob went to work for Standard Oil Corporation in Minneapolis. On December 20, 1949, Bob was married to Jeanne Estes in Minneapolis. They moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1955 and they lived there until Bob's retirement from Standard Oil in 1982. They retired in Spicer and Jeanne died in 1986. On November 10, 1992, he was married to Virginia "Ginger" L. Johnson-Kerfoot in Litchfield and they made their home in Spicer and wintered in Sun City, Arizona. He enjoyed reading, golfing, sailing and loved to travel and take cruises.

He is survived by his wife: Ginger of Spicer; two daughters: Susan Hawes of Washington, DC and Barb (and Steve) Ellingboe of Kandiyohi; two stepsons: Scott (and Marcia) Kerfoot of Elk River and Doug (and Brenda) Kerfoot of Holland, Michigan: two stepdaughters: Karen Dimatteo of Greer, South Carolina and Kathy (and Paul) Hunkins of Anoka and ten grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and first wife: Jeanne in 1986.
