Robert V. Johnson, 91, died on Friday, March 30, 2012 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 5, at the Assembly of God Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and also for one hour at the church prior to the memorial service.
Robert was born June 11, 1920, at the Asbury Hospital in Minneapolis to Ernest and Carrie (Amundson) Johnson. He grew up in St. Paul, attending area schools and graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in 1938. He worked in Willmar for Dwight Johnson - Thompson Co. and then at Northwest Airlines and Vega Aircraft before enlisting for 4 years in the U.S. Navy. After his military service, he returned to Willmar and acquired one-half interest in Dwight Johnson - Thompson Co. In 1953, Donald Jacobson and Robert became sole owners and incorporated under the name of Central Sheet Metal, Inc., and they operated the company for 34 years until its merger with Chappell Duct Co. The new name became Chapell - Central, Inc.
Robert married Edith Huisinga of Prinsburg, Minnesota on August 30, 1947 in Willmar, where they have lived ever since. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church and served on the Deacon Board for 24 years. He also was active in the Youth Department teaching Sunday School and was a church choir member.
He was a board member of the Willmar Chamber of Commerce, president of Willmar Opportunities Board and president of Willmar Industries, Inc., the organization that developed the Willmar Industrial Park. He also was instrumental in helping Willmar acquire the property of the U.S. Air Force base for Willmar Community College, now the Ridgewater College.
He was voted Willmar's "Boss of the Year" in 1963 and in 1976, Central Sheet Metal was awarded the plaque for outstanding promotion of the City of Willmar.
Robert is survived by his wife Edith, son Linelle Johnson (Lil Pidde - fiancé) of Burnsville, son Ardelle (Mary) Johnson of Minnetonka, and daughter Jody (Tommy) Gobats of Eveleth; four grandchildren: Kristine (Darin) Tosse, Jeremy (Laura) Johnson, Ina Johnson and Kira Johnson; one great-grandchild, Hannah Tosse; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Johnson of San Diego, California, and daughter-in-law Delores Johnson of Burnsville.
