Robert C. Manley, age 80, of Longville and formerly of Spicer, died Monday morning, May 1st, at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 5th, at Our Lady Of The Lakes Catholic Church will Fr. Jeffrey P. Horesji officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Henderson-Lewis American Legion Post 545 of Spicer and the Finstad-Week Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1639 of Willmar. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M., Thursday at the Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer and one hour prior to the services at the church. A Parish Prayer service with be at 6:30 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
Robert Cecil Manley was born on February 17, 1926, in Raymond, Minnesota, the son of Edward Hugh and Katherine (Burch) Manley. As a boy Robert worked on the family farm doing chores with the livestock. Farming was his pride and joy, he farmed until he was 22 years of age. At the age of 23, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean War receiving Five Bronze Star medals and many commendations. On June 6, 1953 he was married to Betty Lou Hopkins at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Willmar. They made their home in Willmar for 15 years then moved to Spicer for 35 years. After retiring, they moved to Longville 5 years ago. Robert worked many jobs to support his family. He worked on the railroad as a fireman and a repairman. Robert started his own TV repair shop in Willmar where he enjoyed talking to many people. He later worked at New London-Spicer Schools as a custodian where he would invite teachers and students over for Betty's great pies. He then went to work at Rice Hospital as a repairman, where he made many new friends. He made friends wherever he would go. Robert loved being with his family, friends and enjoyed vacations, painting, planning many projects around the home.
He is survived by his wife: Betty of Longville; three children: Todd (and Sandy) Manley of Remer, Scott (and Euince) Manley of Sartell and Chandie (and James) Kraus of New London; nine grandchildren; an expected great-granddaughter and his dog, Tai. Also surviving are a brother: James Manley of Murdock; his twin sister: Ruth Manley of Atwater and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Terry Manley in 1971; six brothers, three sisters, and his grandparents.
