Roger Johnson

Roger H. Johnson, 96, of Atwater, died Sunday, April 28, at SunnyView Assisted Living in Atwater.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, at the Rosendale United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, at the Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. www.petersonbrothers.com

Roger Harris Johnson was born on October 1, 1916, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Harris R. and Lulu R. (Leslie) Johnson. He grew up in Lake Elizabeth Township, graduated from Atwater High School in 1935 and then returned to work on the family farm. On October 1, 1940, Roger was united in marriage to Marion Gertrude Bernhagen. They lived and farmed in Lake Elizabeth Township and also raised registered Guernsey's and turkeys. Roger served as the Lake Elizabeth Township Treasurer for many years. He was a longtime member of the Rosendale United Methodist Church. Roger was the great great grandson of The Rev. P.M. Johnson who brought the Methodist religion to Kandiyohi County. He enjoyed farming, animals, music and family.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 72 years, Marion; one son, Larry R. Johnson of Atwater; one granddaughter, Evonne (and Wayne) Jensen of Brookings, South Dakota and two great grandsons, Brandon and Hunter. Also surviving is one brother, Robert D. (and Norma Jean) Johnson of Marshalltown, Iowa, besides other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lucille McCollum and a daughter-in-law, Harriet Marie Johnson in 1996.
