Roger D. Johnson, age 83, of New London, died Thursday evening, June 18, at Glen Oaks Care Center in New London.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 22, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Interment will be in the Spicer City Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Henderson-Lewis American Legion Post in Spicer. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at the Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Roger Donald Johnson was born on April 17, 1926, in Minneapolis, the son of Gust and Helen (Benson) Johnson. Roger was baptized in Minneapolis and confirmed at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Atwater. At the age of six, Roger and his family moved to a farm north of Atwater. He attended District 50 School and Atwater High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. Following his discharge, he received his GED and continued his education, graduating from Western States Chiropractic College. On March 12, 1955, he was united in marriage to Janet Miller at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. They lived in the Spicer community and moved to New London in 2003. He practiced his profession in Kansas before returning to Minnesota. He was employed by the Willmar Regional Treatment Center for 28 years, retiring in 1987. He and his family operated Johnson Lawn Service for many years. Roger was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer and a member of the American Legion for 63 years.
Roger enjoyed yard work and was very particular about his lawn. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and took an annual trip to Canada. Roger and Janet also spent the last six winters in Arizona. Roger also loved his routine of morning breakfast and evening drives with Janet.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years: Janet; four children: Gerald Johnson of Spicer, Nancy (and Lyle) Palmquist of New London, Jim "JD" Johnson of Spicer, and Calvin Johnson of Spicer; four grandchildren: Cody Johnson, Shanna Palmquist (and special friend Duane Friehl), Shad Palmquist, and Nathan Johnson; and a great-grandchild: Ayden Friehl. Also surviving are a sister: Norma (and Bob) Olson of Sunburg; a sister-in-law: Iris Johnson of Spicer; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson: Jeremy Johnson; and a brother: Roland Johnson.
