Roger Martin

October 17, 1940 — March 15, 2013

Roger P. Martin, age 72, of Willmar, died at his home on Friday afternoon, March 15, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, at Bethel Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Rice Hospice of Willmar are preferred.

Roger Paul Martin was born in Willmar on October 17, 1940 to Paul and Bertha (Nelson) Martin. He was raised by his beloved grandparents, Erick and Anna Nelson in Svea, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at the Svea Lutheran Church. Roger graduated from Willmar High School in 1959. After high school he joined the U. S. Army and was stationed in Africa.

On September 21, 1963 he was united in marriage to Shirley Davis. They spent most of their married life in the Willmar area. However, they did leave "home" for approximately eight years; living in Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Duluth, MN.

Roger spent the large part of his career as a computer programmer, working for Somody Supply in Willmar, The Sun Valley Lodge in Sun Valley, ID, and as Director of Computer Programming at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth. He also owned several small businesses in the Willmar area. After retirement, Roger drove tour bus for several years. He always loved being behind the wheel and enjoyed driving bus until his health forced him to quit.

When younger, Roger was an avid bowler, hunter and fisherman. After retirement, he took up golf, and that became his sports passion. He spent as much time as possible on the golf course and made many friends at Valley Golf Course in Willmar. Roger and Shirley spent seven winters in Lake Havasu, Arizona so he was able to make golf a year-round event. But, his real passion was his family, as nothing meant more to him. He was extremely proud of his three sons and their families, and the title "grandpa" was most cherished.

Roger will be missed by his wife, Shirley; sons, Brian (Julie) of Duluth, Eric (Heather) of Sartell, and Andy (Julie) of St. Cloud; five grandchildren, Nicole, Nathan, Grant, Jacob, and Sean; two sisters, Diane (Lowell) Smith of Coos Bay, OR and Sherrill (Mark) Zerserson of Brentwood, CA; brothers-in-law, Bob (Linda) Davis and Paul Davis; as well as aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, two sisters, Pauline Martin and Betty Berg, brother-in-law Richard Davis, and sisters-in-law, Evonne Davis and Mavis Davis.

He was loved, and he will be missed by many.
