Roger E. Nelson, age 90, of Willmar died Monday morning, June 1, at his home at Copperleaf Senior Living Center in Willmar
A celebration of life gathering will take place on Sunday, June 14th, 2-4 PM, at The Oaks at Eagle Creek in Willmar. Interment will be private at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials are preferred to the Heart Rhythm Disease Program in the Cardiovascular Research Center at Mayo Clinic. Roger Eugene Nelson, born April 14, 1925 in Hawick, MN, the oldest child of Nickoli and Laura (Arithson) Nelson. He graduated from Willmar High School. After learning how to fly, he joined the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. While stationed in Independence, KS, he met and married MarthaTodd. He was called back to serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and trained many pilots in the T-33. Roger and Martha made their home in many places while in the USAF and throughout his career as a corporate pilot, in which he saw much of the world. He was also a jack-of-all-trades, owning a concrete mixing plant, a trucking company, an automotive repair, and a toy manufacturing company. After retiring, Roger and Martha moved from Eden Prairie to Willmar. Martha passed away in May, 2014, in their 70th year of marriage.
Roger is survived by one son, Stuart (and Carol) Nelson of Hutchinson, one daughter, Ann (and Jim) Mitchell of Minneapolis, four grandchildren; Laura (Jesse) Erdal, Robert Nelson, Nickoli Mitchell, and Jackson Mitchell and three great-granddaughters; Katarina, Lily and Aubree Erdal. Also surviving is one sister, Iris Backlund of Kandiyohi, one brother-in-law, Richard Tornquist of Willmar and seven nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, mother and father-in-law, Gerald and Jessie Todd, sister Kathryn Tornquist and brother-in-law Allan Backlund.
