Ruby I. Bernhagen, age 84, of Willmar, died Tuesday afternoon, August 14, at the Sterling House in Willmar.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 18, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Interment will be at Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, August 17, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials to the Lake Florida Mission Church are preferred.
Ruby Irene Bernhagen was born January 5, 1928, on the family farm at Lake Florida in Lake Andrew Township, the daughter of Walter and Manda (Thompson) Skoglund. She grew up on the family farm and attended New London High School, graduating in 1946. She met Ernest Bernhagen and they were married November 3, 1949. Ruby worked in the Register of Deeds Office for Kandiyohi County, First National Bank of Willmar, and First Federal Savings and Loan of Willmar.
Ruby was a Rice Hospital volunteer for many years and also volunteered as a money counter for Vinje Lutheran Church and as an election judge in Willmar. She was active with the American Legion Auxiliary, Eagle Auxiliary, Willmar Senior Citizen Center, Good Neighbor Club and the Widow/Widowers Friendship Club. Ruby enjoyed reading, crocheting, watching the Twins, and traveling with Peterson Bus Tours, R & J Tours and Riley Bus Tours. She was also a regular at Cashwise with her coffee club friends.
Ruby is survived by her sons: Donald (and Bev) Bernhagen of West Fargo, ND and Doug (and Loydene) Bernhagen of Willmar; four grandchildren: Jill (and Josh) Yri of Bismark, ND, Cathy (and Mark) Nielson of Witchita Falls, TX, Josh (and Tara) Bernhagen of Willmar and Jenna Bernhagen of Willmar; and two great-grandchildren: Gavin Yri and Anika Nielson. She is also survived by a brother: Eldon Skoglund (and special friend, Cyd Oswald) of Lakeville; three sisters-in-law: Pat Skoglund of Brooklyn Park, Nancy Skoglund of Goodyear, AZ and Marion Johnson of Atwater; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Ernie in 1988; and three brothers: Kenneth Skoglund, Wallace Skoglund and Paul Skoglund.
