Ruth H. Phillips, age 72, of Willmar, died Wednesday evening, March 19th, at her home.
The memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 22, at the United Methodist Church in Willmar with Rev. Chad Gilbertson officiating. The interment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 4:00-6:30 p.m. Friday in the Fireside Room of the United Methodist Church and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Church in Willmar. Funeral arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
Ruth Helen Cass Sooter Phillips was born on February 18, 1936, Oakley, Kansas, the daughter of Gerald and Grace Kurtz Cass. As a child she lived in Oakley, Kansas, French Glen, Oregon, near San Antonio, Texas, Kansas City, Kansas, and Greeley, Colorado. In 1953, she graduated from Greeley High School and, in 1956, from the University of Northern Colorado with a B.A. in education. On May 29, 1954, she married Bert Phillips and they lived in Greeley, Colorado, San Diego, California, Ontario, Oregon, and Los Angeles, California before moving to Willmar in 1970.
Ruth always worked in the area of education. She taught fourth grade in California and the children of migrant families in Oregon and was the Director of Adult Education in Colorado. She later taught high school literature and Title I in Minnesota until her retirement in 1999.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Willmar, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Priscilla Circle, the Christian Education Committee, the Bazaar Committee and the chair of the Membership Committee.
She is survived by her husband, Bert; three children, Mark (and Kory) Phillips of Maiden Rock, Wisconsin, Catherine (and Stuart) Dalton of Mahtomedi and Todd (and Tina) Phillips of Chisago City; ten grandchildren; a sister, Clare Griffith of San Diego, California and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Clarence A. Sooter and a brother, Leslie Sooter.
