Selma Gunderson

Selma M. Gunderson, age 92, of Willmar, died Wednesday morning, July 1, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar with Rev. Barbara Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be 4-7 pm. Sunday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or Vinje Lutheran Church.

Selma Marie Gunderson was born April 7, 1917, in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, the daughter of Gustave and Edna (Frazier) Adams. She grew up in the Sauk Rapids community, was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sauk Rapids, and attended Sauk Rapids High School. In 1938, she married Lorney Finn and they moved to Willmar. They later divorced in 1947. In 1952, she married Levine Gunderson in Willmar. Selma worked at the State Hospital and at Nelsen's Laundry. In October 1957, Selma and Levine became the caretakers for the Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds. They served 28 years as the caretakers, retiring in 1985. Selma was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary since 1961 and the V.F.W. Auxiliary since 1974. She was a former "Mother of the Year" for the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She has also been a member of Vinje Lutheran Church since 1962 and was a life member of the Kandiyohi County Fair.

Selma enjoyed baking bread, watching Twins baseball and Wheel of Fortune and playing cards, especially 500 rummy. She also enjoyed crocheting and made a tablecloth for everyone in the family. She loved music and enjoyed going dancing and playing her concertina. She also loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children: Irenus (and Sue) Finn of Aitkin; Sallie (and Gary) Bergeson of Chanhassen, Ardis (and Ron) Mahlen of Bloomington and Beverly Cain of Willmar. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren ; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Levine in 1988; a daughter: Katherine Gunderson at birth; a son: Daniel Finn in February 2008; a daughter-in-law: Nancy Finn in November 2008; three brothers: Gustave Adams, Charles Adams and Robert Adams; and four sisters: Ethel Martinello, Bernice Herman, Edith Gillin and Clara Hein.
