Shirley A. Owen, age 70, of Atwater, died Friday morning, December 4, at her home on Diamond Lake near Atwater.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 7, at Faith Lutheran Church (310 Medayto Dr., Spicer, MN 56288) in Spicer. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 6, at the church and will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday. Arrangements are with Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer. Memorials are preferred to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org) or CaringBridge.org.
Shirley was born June 8, 1939, in Ledyard, Iowa, to Ronald and Alma (Sheldahl) Schultz. She grew up in Elmore, Minnesota and Winnebago, Minnesota and graduated from Winnebago High School in 1957. She graduated from Mankato State University in 1961 and began her teaching career in Trimont, Minnesota. On August 10, 1963, she married Dale Owen in Winnebago and they made their home in West St. Paul and Shirley taught in South St. Paul. In 1967, Dale and Shirley moved to Worthington, Minnesota, and in 1980, to Marshall, Wisconsin. Following the birth of her children, Shirley was a substitute teacher for several years and taught Release Time at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Worthington. Following Dale's retirement in 2002, they moved to the Twin Cities. In 2004, they moved to their home on Diamond Lake near Atwater.
She was a former member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Worthington and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She was currently an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer, where she volunteered at the Welcome Center. Shirley was an outgoing person and loved socializing and being around people. She enjoyed flowers and gardening, decorating for holidays, and reading.
She is survived by her husband: Dale; her children: Darcy (and Tony) Maskevich of Shakopee, Minnesota, Christopher "Kip" Owen of Forest Lake, Minnesota, and Nicole Owen of Shakopee, Minnesota; two grandchildren: Cabe Maskevich and Colton Maskevich; a brother: Douglas (and Debbie) Schultz of Truman, Minnesota; a sister: Ronalda (and Jerry) Sebey of Spicer. Minnesota; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
