Stephen Szalma
February 1, 1975 — January 4, 2014
Stephen Szalma, age 38, died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Willmar, MN on January 4th, 2014. A celebration of Stephen's life will be hald from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, at West Central Industries at 1300 22nd Street SW, Willmar (please use the south entrance). Please plan to share your stories, photos and music. Lunch will be provided. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home.
Steve Joseph Szalma was born February 1, 1975, in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, the son of Joseph and Barbara (Ourednik) Szalma. He grew up and graduated high school in Mentor, Ohio. Steve attended Hiram College and recieved his PHD in genetics from the University of Missouri. Steve worked for the USDA at North Carolina State University. In 2006 Steve moved to Kandiyohi, MN and worked as a research scientist for DuPont Pioneer.
Steve had a love for all music, especially blue grass which he enjoyed playing on the banjo and guitar. Steve was avid outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Steve enjoyed cooking and sharing a good meal with others.
He will be remembered for his kind, gentle, personality and was never afraid to give of himself to help and support others.
Steve treasured the time spent with Stacy and Codie playing ball, bike riding, cooking, fishing, gardening and building with legos. Steve also had a great love for and spending time with his family's three cats, Sam, Tubby and Itty Bitty; and puppies, Molly and Ruff. Over the past two years, Steve inherited a very large and extended family which he enjoyed spending time with by camping, fishing, sharing stories and holidays. Steve especially enjoyed spending time with and sharing stories with Stacy' s parents and grandparents.
He is survived by his life partner, Stacy Gilberts, and her children Codie and Kaleigh; his father, Joe Szalma of Ohio; one sister, Karen Szalma of Minneapolis; grandma Alice Ourednik; uncle Dave Ourednik; aunt Sue DiShong, besides other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara in July of 2013.
