Thoretta "Tess" Hoffer, age 85, of Kandiyohi, died Saturday afternoon, April 10, at the Sterling House in Willmar, where she had resided since January 2007.
Services will be 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, April 14, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the services at the church.
Tess was born October 2, 1924, in Green Lake Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, to Alfred and Anna (Steffensen) Knudsen. She grew up in Green Lake Township and was baptized and confirmed at Green Lake Lutheran Church. Tess attended Diamond Lake District 27 School and later Atwater High School, graduating in 1943. Following high school, she worked several jobs, including at the O.P.A. office and at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
On September 24, 1947, she married August "Gus" Hoffer at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi. She was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, where she was active with the ELCW. She was also a member of the Atwater American Legion Auxiliary and the Knucklehead Square Dance Club. Tess enjoyed spending time with and raising her family and square dancing with friends. She also enjoyed traveling, gardening, camping, hunting and fishing.
She is survived by her husband: August "Gus" Hoffer; three daughters: Lynette (and Joseph) Gordon of St. James, LeeAnn Aitkin of Shoreview and Laurie (and Robert) Ellanson of Lake Crystal; six grandchildren: Lincoln Gordon, Lindsey (and Kyle) Olson, Michael (and Leah) Aitkin, William Aitkin, Andrew (and Karen) Fostervold and Daniel (and Samantha Senart) Aitkin and four great-grandchildren: Hannah Aitkin, Andrew Aitkin, Ava Olson and Ila Olson. Also surviving are two sisters: Erma Miller of Willmar and Ramona Perron of Waconia; and four sisters-in-law: Virginia Knudsen of Lakeland, FL, Norma Knudsen of New London, Francis Knudsen of Hector and Marilyn Knudsen of Kandiyohi, and very special family friend, Evelyn Larson of Willmar.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Eugene, Harlan, Kinsley and Gordon Knudsen and a son-in-law: Robert Aitkin in 2009.
