WILLMAR
Verna B. Johnson, age 95, of Willmar, died Friday morning, June 2nd, at the Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Tuesday, June 6th, at Bethel Lutheran Church with Rev. Thomas Mundahl officiating. The interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials the Bethesda Heritage Center are preferred. Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Verna Blanche Johnson was born on September 11, 1910, in Madison, Minnesota, the daughter of Emily (Stempson) and Oscar Sjolie. She grew up in that area and graduated form Madison High School. In 1939, she married Gordon H. Johnson and together they owned and operated a trucking firm while also operating the Willmar Theatre where she worked as a cashier. Verna was a life-long member of Bethel Lutheran Church where she was active in several circles, taught Sunday and Tuesday school classes. She volunteered at Bethesda Homes and was an active member of Degree of Honor, Sons of Norway and Home Extension.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Halvorson of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Sheila (and Michael) Geheren of Minneapolis and one son, Gary (and Nancy) Johnson of Willmar. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband (Gordon in 1971), three sisters, (Ione Hoyum, Doris Carruth and Alice Oppem) and one brother (Kenneth Sjolie).
