Vernice Underthun, age 93, of Willmar, died Monday afternoon, April 4, at the Good Shephard Nursing Home in Sauk Rapids.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 9, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Interment will be at Mandt Lutheran Cemetery near Milan. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home.
Vernice Underthun was born on September 12, 1917, in Mandt Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota, the daughter of Gerhardt and Selma Gilbertson. She grew up in that community, attended nearby rural schools and in 1937, graduated from Milan High School. On September 24, 1938, Vernice was united in marriage to Astor Underthun. They lived in Montevideo and Willmar. In 2007, she moved to the Country Manor in Sartell. Vernice enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, needle work, crocheting, painting and reading her bible.
She is survived by two sons, DuWayne (and Betty) Underthun of Willmar and Randall (and Sherri) Underthun of Duluth; four daughters, Mary Buesing of Colorado Springs, CO., Deb (and Joe) Halter of Oshkosh, WI., Bonnie (and Jim) Roeder of Independence and Jana Eichens of Sartell; 19 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Verdi Gilbertson of Montevideo and Curtis Gilbertson of Hudson, WI.; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Gilbertson and Ruby Gilbertson, both of Montevideo, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Astor in 2008; one granddaughter, Lisa Buesing; one son-in-law, Tom Buesing; two sisters, Mildred and Clarice Olson; and three brothers, Roy, Earl and Lyle Gilbertson.
