Vernon Ronald Braaten, age 69, of Minneapolis and rural Glenwood, died Monday, August 15, at his home in Minneapolis from cancer caused by exposure to agent orange.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, August 19, at Hope Lutheran Church in Sunburg. Interment will be at West Norway Lake Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers - Sunburg Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Pope County or Hennepin County Humane Society or the Patriot Guard - Willmar Chapter are preferred.
Vernon was born on June 25, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Tilmer and Gladys (Helgeson) Braaten. He grew up in NE Minneapolis, graduated from Edison High School and attended the University of Minnesota. In 1967, Vernon was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Viet Nam. He was always very proud of his military service. Vernon was employed as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Minneapolis for over 30 years, retiring in 1999.
Vernon enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his home on Gilchrist Lake. He had a love for his cats and dogs. Over the years, they were his constant companions. His hobbies also included fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his special friend, Kathryn "Kate" Utke of Minneapolis and one aunt, Verna Wright of Willmar, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous aunts and uncles.
