Vernon C. Peterson, 97, of Spicer, died Tuesday, April 6, at the Belgrade Nursing Home in Belgrade.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Burial will be in the Lake Florida Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer.
Vernon Carl Peterson was born March 7, 1913, at Lake Florida in Lake Andrew Township, to William and Annie (Holm) Peterson. He grew up in rural Spicer and attended country school near his home. He worked on several farms in the Spicer area. On March 18, 1939, Vernon married Lorraine Lovander at the Lovander home on Henderson Lake and they made their home and farmed on Lake Florida until 1976 when they sold the farm. Vernon and Lorraine moved to Spicer and served as custodians of Faith Lutheran Church until their retirement in 1997. Lorraine died in 2003. Vernon had lived at the Belgrade Nursing Home since July 2008.
Vernon loved visiting with people, reading, gardening, fishing and telling fishing stories. He also enjoyed his time at the Belgrade Nursing Home, visiting with staff and residents, doing daily workouts in the exercise room, playing bingo and participating in outings, especially the drives around the area and pontoon rides on the lakes.
Vernon is survived by a daughter, Beverly Robertson of Max, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Nathan Robertson of Max, Minnesota, Heather (and Jason) Schimmel of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, and Bryce (and Jessica) Robertson of Bemidji, Minnesota; three great-grandchildren, Logan Schimmel, Taylor Schimmel and Aria Robertson; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine in 2003; a son-in-law, LeRoy Robertson in 1993; a brother, Reynold Peterson; and a sister, Doris Johnson.
