Wendell Skindelien

November 15, 1931 — October 21, 2012

Wendell K. Skindelien, age 80, of Sunburg, died unexpectedly Sunday evening, Oct. 21, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Hope Lutheran Church in Sunburg. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Peterson Brothers Sunburg Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be at the West Norway Lake Lutheran Cemetery with military honors provided by the Willmar American Legion Post #167. www.petersonbrothers.com

Wendell was born on November 15, 1931, in Sunburg, Minnesota, the son of Oscar Sr. and Emelia (Rood) Skindelien. He grew up in the Sunburg community and received his education in the Sunburg and Kerkhoven schools. Wendell served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, Wendell worked with his father manufacturing wagon boxes. On January 15, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marsha A. Leaf. They made their home in Sunburg and since 1957 have owned and operated the Skindelien Hardware Store in Sunburg. Wendell was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, first as a sub then as a full time rural mail carrier. He was also a self-employed painter and carpenter. Wendell served on the Sunburg volunteer Fire Department and was a past Fire Chief. He was a long time member of Hope Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post #167. Wendell enjoyed playing town baseball for many years for the Norway Lake and Kerkhoven teams. His hobbies included fishing, hunting for deer and waterfowl and watching his grandchildren's activities.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marsha of Sunburg; one daughter, Monica (and Richard) Elliott of Sunburg; two grandchildren, Greg (and Ashley) Elliott of Sunburg and Meriah Elliott of Sunburg and one great grandson, Wyatt Elliott. Also surviving is one brother, Oscar Jr. (and Iola) Skindelien of Sunburg and one sister-in-law, Arlene Skindelien of Alberquerque, New Mexico, besides other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elroy, Vernon and Virgil Skindelien and one sister, Mercedes Nelson.
