Wendell Smith, 89, of Grove City, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 12, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. During the last weeks of his life, family visited from all across the nation, for what he called his "Bon Voyage" party.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, at First Baptist Church in Grove City. A private interment will be held in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post 167 of Willmar. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Wendell and Wayne, his identical twin brother, were born January 25, 1924, to Lloyd and Grace (Rhodes) Smith near Lake Lillian, Minnesota. The Smith family lived and farmed for many years in Minnesota. The 'Smith Twins' lettered in football, basketball and track and graduated from Grove City High School. Wendell served in the Navy during WWII. He returned home after the war and was united in marriage to Maurine Ann Erickson. Wendell and Maurine joined the First Baptist Church in Grove City where he taught Sunday school, lead boys' Rangers and was a Deacon. Wendell also served on the Farmer's Home Administration Board and the Grove City School Board. After retiring from farming, he sold insurance for over 30 years. Wendell & Maurine were blessed with over 65 years together and three children.
He is survived by his wife, Maurine; his children: Guy & Cynthia (Smith) Chetrit of Spicer, Kent & Jodi (Norling) Smith of Grove City, and Kraig & Jacyln (Struthers) Smith of Montana; grandchildren: Aviv Chetrit, Micah Chetrit, Ben & Joy (Tintes) Smith, Eli & Danielle (Martin) Smith, Tim & Bethany (Smith) Lund, Matt & Emily (Smith) Lund, Nate & Joy (Masica) Smith, Joseph & Stephanie (Smith) Kraemer, Eli & Jenny (Smith) Lanctot, Rosanna Smith, Sam Smith, Jon Smith, Kristy Smith, Reuben Smith, Abel Smith, Jared & Becky (Stern) Smith, Drew & Kellie (Smith) Dummermuth, Nate & Leah (Smith) Olson, Levi Smith, Chris & Michal (Smith) Burggraff, and Jeffrey Smith; 41 great-grandchildren; sister, Marian (Smith) Allen; special nephews and nieces; and other relatives and friends.
Wendell was preceded in death by his parents; infant son: Steven; and siblings: Wayne Smith, Elma (Smith) Almand, Donald Smith, and Robert Smith.
