Willis Emmitt Thompson, age 82, of Willmar, died Tuesday morning, April 5, at Glen Oaks Care Center in New London.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday, April 11, at the Assembly of God Church in Willmar. Interment will be at the Eagle Lake Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Sunday, April 10, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Willis Emmitt Thompson was born on June 22, 1928, on the family homestead on Point Lake, the son of H. Arthur and Emma (Olsen) Thompson. He grew up north of Willmar and received his education at the Longfellow country school. Willis worked construction in 38 states during his younger years. On October 21, 1950, Willis was married to Elaine Joyce Osborn. They lived in Minneapolis where he was employed at M. E. Construction as a heavy equipment operator. They later moved to Willmar and Willis worked for Chuck and Henry Decathelineau and the Kandiyohi County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. Due to a health disability, Willis retired in 1966. During the 1960's and 1970's, Willis was also self-employed as a gravedigger in the Willmar area.
Willis was a talented musician, playing guitar by ear. He enjoyed being outdoors, taking his dog Shotzie for walks and spending time with his family and friends. Willis was a true believer and a God loving man. His last words were "I am filled with happiness".
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elaine of Willmar; three daughters, Deb (and Arnie) Golberg of Willmar, Linda (and Jim) Wiegmann of Raymond and Melissa (and Bart) Bradford of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Vernon Thompson of Willmar and Garfield Thompson of Colorado; two sisters, Elaine Bonnema of St. Peter and Margie (and Lawrence) Rickman of Colorado, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three daughters, two in infancy and Vicki in 2003; one grandson, Jesse Golberg in 2008; two sisters, Gladys and Lorraine and five brothers, Raymond, Lawrence, Sidney, Llewelyn and Myron.
