York X Flegel, age 77, of Willmar died Tuesday morning, July 17th, at the Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 20, at Vinje Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Thursday, July 19, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
York X Flegel was born on April 15, 1930, on the family farm near Kulm, North Dakota, the son of Daniel and Mona (Elliott) Flegel. He attended rural school, graduated from Kulm High School and Valley City State University. On July 25, 1954, York was married to Marlene Hehr. They lived in Havana, ND. and Veblen, SD., where York taught social studies and coached. He received his masters degree and administrative license from SD State University in Aberdeen. They moved to Raymond where York taught and then advanced to the Raymond High School Principal and later Superintendent of Schools. In 1966, they moved to Willmar where York became an Elementary Principal until his retirement in 1987.
York was an active member of his church, the Minnesota School Patrol program, Willmar Optimists Club and the Minnesota Elementary School Principal Association. He was an avid fisherman. His family spent many hours camping, traveling and on the lake. He loved spending time surrounded by his family. York considered his wife, children, grandchildren and friends his greatest blessings.
He is survived by his three children, Renae (and Michael) Tostenson of Milan, Laurie (and Randy) Frahm of Minnetonka and Robert (and Shawn) Flegel of Willmar and five grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Seaton Flegel of Arizona and Lyonel (and Marge) Flegel of Kulm, North Dakota and two sisters, Zona Kalmback of Oregon and Eloys Lerno of Texas, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marlene in June of 2006; four brothers and one sister.
